ABOUT THE SOCIETY

Background and History

The idea of forming an Indian Society for Radiation Biology was floated in November 1987 by radiation biologists from India and abroad who gathered in Manipal in the National Symposium on Radiation Biology organized by Prof Uma Devi. The proposal was enthusiastically discussed during the Symposium. Thereafter in a special meeting chaired by Dr. A. Nagaratnam, former Director, Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur, an Ad Hoc Executive Committee (EC) was formed with Prof. P. N. Srivastava as the Founder President and Dr. H. C. Goel as the Secretary. The EC also included a Treasurer and 10 members of the EC. It was then decided to organize a scientific conference and convene a general body meeting (GBM) of the society in near future. The Society was formally registered in Delhi under the name of the “Indian Society for Radiation Biology” in 1989 vide Registration No. S-19927 dated May 5, 1989.
